Korean plate
Yi dynasty
15./17. Century
Diameter 18 cm, height 5 cm
Small plate with creamy white crackled buncheong glaze and highly abstracted floral iron oxide painting in black-brown of Gyeryongsan type. In the mirror and on the stand ring six fire support impressions each.
Gyeryongsan with its Buddhist monastery complexes is considered one of the holiest mountains in Korea. With the suppression of Buddhism in favor of the Confucian state doctrine of the Yi government, the former monks were forced to provide for their own livelihood from the 15th century onward and began to make glazed stoneware with iron oxide paintings based on Chinese models from the Cizhou workshops. This piece, with its almost abstracted decor, elegantly reflects the Buddhist aesthetic of Zen (Seon in Korean).
Noteworthy is the stylistic similarity to the cizhou dish (previous batch).
