Chinese bowl
Small bowl in north chinese cizhoustyle
Jin Dynasty, 1125-1234
Diameter 9 cm, height 5 cm
Creamy white glaze with sharply contoured decoration in black-brown iron oxide.
Ring recessed inside the glaze, which facilitated the firing of several vessels stacked inside each other, foot unglazed for the same reason.
Entirely influenced by the restrained, Zen-influenced style of Song wares, the sparingly applied floral decoration here creates an elegance that makes one understand why the more vernacular Cizhou wares have enjoyed such popularity among Japanese tea connoisseurs.
Noteworthy is the stylistic similarity to the Korean Gyeryongsan plate (following lot).
