German artist and writer of the 20th century, especially of the interwar period. Main representative of Verism and New Objectivity. Apprenticeship as a porcelain painter in Pforzheim, 1907 to 1909 studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Stuttgart. From 1910 training at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe with Wilhelm Trübner and Hans Thoma. Through friendship with Julius Kaspar contacts to the underworld. 1919 First exhibition in Karlsruhe with Wladimir von Zabotin. 1919 co-founder of the Rih group, together with Wladimir von Zabotin, Georg Scholz, Oskar Fischer, Julius Kaspar, Egon Itta, Eugen Segewitz and Walter Becker. Was close to Dadaism, Cubism and developed in the direction of New Objectivity. Participated in the first international Dada fair in 1920, as did George Grosz, Wieland Herzfelde, John Heartfield. His circle of friends included Bertolt Brecht, Fritz Sternberg, Alfred Döblin, George Grosz and Carl Zuckmayer. In 1921 also a member of the Novembergruppe, as were Otto Dix, George Grosz, Raoul Hausmann, John Heartfield, Hannah Höch, and Georg Scholz, among others. In 1924 co-founder of the communist artists' association Rote Gruppe. In 1937 his art was classified as degenerate art by the Nazis. In 1942, many of his works were lost in bombing raids. After the war, co-founder of the Neue Gruppe in Munich, with Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Karl Hofer, Charles Crodel, Willi Baumeister, Erich Heckel, Oskar Kokoschka, Ernst Wilhelm Nay or Max Pechstein. Created impressive portraits, depictions from the underworld, the red light milieu and street scenes. Interest in the eccentric, fetishism and masochism and Karl May. Neo-objective works of the 1920s comparable to George Grosz, Otto Dix, Karl Hubbuch and Christian Schad.
