Pair of cloisonne vases
Japan
Meiji period, 1867-1911
Height 16,5 cm
Pair of cloisonne vases with flowers and swallows on black background in highly elegant style, which had an enormous impact on the development of European Art Nouveau through pieces presented especially at the World's Fairs in Paris in 1878, 1889 and 1900. Perfectly crafted works like these have also fostered renewed interest in traditional non-industrial methods of production and played their part in the emergence of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
