David Terniers II (1610-1690), Landscape with Travelers

In the foothills of a mountain landscape, a brightly lit path runs along a rocky slope to the right. It then turns and leads down into the tree-lined valley where, on the left edge of the picture, is a farmhouse by a pond. A castle in full sunlight rises on a hilltop in the middle distance. In the background lies a sun-drenched plain. On the path in the foreground on the right, a gypsy reads the hand of a man. A porter runs further to the right. The colors are very delicate, especially in the light tones of the foreground, and the brushstrokes are brisk and accurate. In his mountain landscapes, David Teniers takes Joos de Momper as his model. The painting can be dated to the early 1630s., Oil on wood, 26 × 37cm
